The industrial researcher education is a part of the Industrial PhD initiative that consists of collaboration around a concrete development project between a university, a student, a business and potentially a governmental research institution.
The student is supervised by at least two supervisors, one from the university and one from the business and possibly a third. In special cases the university can assign a person who is not employed by the university as the main supervisor, for example from a governmental research institution.
The student is employed by the business with pay for the duration of the entire Industrial PhD education and divides their time between the business, the university and the governmental research institution.
Businesses and universities can apply for a grant from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation for partial compensation of expenses for participation in Industrial PhD projects.
